Encountering the Supernatural at Fort Benning, Georgia

After his tour of duty in South Vietnam, Tom was sent to Fort Benning, Georgia. It was at this point that he rededicated his life to the Lord and determined that he was going to do His Will. It was during this time that he began to encounter various types supernatural entities: both good and evil. In time, he would understand more fully, the Power of the Name of Jesus Christ and how the evil ones could be defeated. Learning how to use this would make a big difference in his future life.

On the earthly plane, Tom was assigned to the Human Resources Experimentation (HUMROE) Project, working to improve the individual soldier's basic rifle marksmanship. Experimentation is probably the wrong word for what the Army was attempting to accomplish. Every soldier knows that their success on the field of battle is a function of how well they handle their rifle. This program helped the Army figure out how to make soldiers better marksmen. Tom also began graduate studies to receive his Master of Business Administration Degree (M.B.A.) from J. Mack Robinson School of Business at Georgia State University.

It was also during this time that Tom began to develop a prophetic ministry. Early on in his Christian life, the Lord had showed him how the Cuban Missile Crisis would work out, but he was too timid to attempt to share that information with the Kennedy Administration. Now, after many years, it was happening again. The book describes his vision of Jesus Christ.

The book also describes a vision of the Banyan Tree in relation to the future of the United States. Tom would learn from this Divine vision, the true Will of God for the United States of American and its Federal Government. Similar to visions given to George Washington (1777), William Branham (given in 1933, the prophecies are in Rev. Branham's sermons, which you can download for free), and A. A. Allen (1954), he saw a destruction of the United States government that was heart-rending. It also clarified and expanded the prophecies received by General Washington and Revs. Branham and Allen. This prophecy has also been confirmed by others as well. It is spelled out in detail in the Major's book Alive on the Edge.

Reassignment to South Korea

When it came time for Tom to complete another overseas assignment, he was initially assigned to be a Military Advisor in South Vietnam, just as he was before. Just before he was getting ready to ship out for Vietnam, his orders were almost mysteriously changed and he was headed to South Korea. Had he gone to South Vietnam, he would have likely never came home. When the Tet Offensive of 1968 fell apart, the Viet Cong were mostly wiped out and the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) took over the Communist insurrection.

By 1972, United States forces were beginning to leave under President Nixon's new Vietnamization Program. In place of the departing U.S. troops, the United States sent Military Advisors to help guide the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN). This program did not fare well as the ARVN (Army of the Republic of Vietnam-South Vietnam) rarely followed their advisors' advice and eventurally the North Vietnamese Army overran South Vietnam. Many American Military Advisors were either killed or captured. Had Tom gone to Vietnam a second time, he would have likely not come home.

When Tom got to South Korea, he would soon learn that the Communists had not forgotten about their neighbors to the south. He discovered that his company had been infiltrated by members of the U. S. Communist Party who were there to start an uprising in South Korea. Making things worse, there were racial tensions between the black, white, and Korean troops. It seemed like an unsurmountable task, but in time, the Lord showed Tom how to turn his company into one of the best in South Korea. Because they were so proficient in their movements around the mountains of South Korea, they were called "Baird's Mountain Goats."

By the time Tom had reformed his company into one of the best in South Korea, the United States Army had an even more difficult task for him: back in the United States of America. Click here to read the next section.
